How to Upgrade Wordpress Tutorial

October 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Many websites are being built today using a popular content management system (CMS) called Wordpress, including this blog. Upgrading is simple so long as you have an FTP program (such as the free one you can get at http://www.coreftp.com) and assuming know the access credentials to move files your website.

Here are the Steps to Upgrade Wordpress:

  1. FTP your entire website to a folder called /backup/ somewhere on your computer
  2. Go to Wordpress.com to download the latest version, unzip to an easy-to-find folder
  3. On the web server, make a copy of the live wp-config.php file using Notepad
  4. Delete the default themes in the new version of Wordpress (just in case)
  5. Set your local folder to the new version of Wordpress
  6. Replace the database access info in wp-config with the copied info in (2.)
  7. Upload the entire new version of Wordpress to the server
  8. Login to wp-admin to verify that everything works
